Plastic is a global problem that needs to be solved. Collaboration and funding are key parts of the plastic solution.
At Mana, we are proud to be partnering with rePurpose Global, an organization dedicated to reducing plastic waste across the globe. Through rePurpose, we have been connected to an impact partner, Taka Taka Solutions.
What Does it Mean to be Plastic Negative?
Plastic Negative is a term to describe the offset of more plastic than you use in your life or business.
What is an Impact Partner?
An impact partner is a company, organization, or person that you collaborate with and may fund to help remove more plastic waste from the environment than you create.
Who is Taka Taka?
Our impact partner, TakaTaka Solutions, is a waste management service in Kenya that employs and empowers waste pickers to tackle plastic waste. Taka Taka provides 250 waste workers & family members with steady income collecting, sorting, and processing plastic waste.
Taka Taka is based in Nairobi, where more than 50% of waste does not get collected and less than 10% gets recycled. This causes environmental and health problems for everyone.
This organization is changing the way people think about waste and is changing the current situation for the better. They collect waste from households, businesses, and factories and take it to their decentralized sorting sites where it is sorted into more than 40 fractions.
They compost the organic waste into high-quality compost; plastic and other materials like paper, glass, & metal are recycled allowing them to achieve one of the highest recycling rates in the world – at 95%!
How Does Mana Work With Taka Taka?
As part of rePurpose Globals One for One program, every product sold funds Taka Taka to remove 1 lb of nature bound plastic from the waste stream. Waste companies like this need funding to maintain and expand their operations. With every dollar invested, they can employ more workers and remove more plastic waste that may otherwise end up in nature.
Each one of us can do our part to turn the tide with plastic and help clean up our environment. There is much creativity, inspiration, and innovation occurring in this arena. As individuals and companies we can collaborate and create win/win solutions.
