In addition to attentively growing and processing our hemp into CBD oil, the same devotion is given to the macadamia nuts pressed into a rich, golden oil. Our macadamia nut oil processing is completed with care and focused on sustainability and preserving the land and the vital nutrition contained within the macadamia nut.
The macadamia tree is an evergreen tree native to Australia. It was brought to Hawaii in the late 1800s and has become one of the island’s prized crops. Macadamia nuts are a delicious snack with a sweet, buttery, nutty flavor.
They are commonly eaten as is and can be processed into a rich oil. Macadamia nut oil is pressed from the tree’s nuts and used in both cooking and cosmetics. Let’s take a look at some of the amazing benefits and uses of macadamia nuts and their oil.
If you’ve ever wondered, ‘are macadamia nuts healthy?’, the answer is yes. Much like other common nuts, macadamia nuts are high in fat. They are made of monounsaturated fat, which boosts heart health by lowering LDL, the bad type of cholesterol.
In addition, Macadamia nuts are rich in several vital minerals, including manganese, thiamine, copper, selenium, zinc, magnesium, and iron. They are also an excellent source of vitamin B6. With a reasonably low sugar and carbohydrate content, macadamia nuts’ nutrition also comes from their high levels of protein and fiber.
Aside from eating macadamia nuts whole, the oil pressed from the nut has a variety of uses. Macadamia nut oil has a high smoke point (about 400 degrees Fahrenheit) and it’s often used for frying, roasting, and baking. It is also a delightfully smooth and flavorful oil for chocolates and other desserts.
However, no need to limit yourself to only high-heat cooking because macadamia nut oil is delicious as a butter substitute or used in salad dressings. Macadamia nut oil is a beautiful ingredient for skin, body, and hair care products. It is deeply moisturizing and soothes dry skin on contact.
Aside from jojoba and squalane, macadamia nut oil is the closest match to sebum — the naturally occurring oil produced by our skin. It doesn’t clog pores, and it has anti-inflammatory properties that will help soothe skin irritation.
We’ve answered the question “Are macadamia nuts healthy?” but what specific benefits can they provide? Macadamia nuts are rich in antioxidants that fight free radicals that can damage the body’s cells and lead to conditions affecting the heart and brain.
Consuming plant-based antioxidant foods like macadamia nuts can help fight these unstable molecules and protect the body from damage. Antioxidants fight against the free radicals that cause cellular damage leading to heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes.
Not all macadamia nut processing is the same. Commercial producers and processors adhere to varying standards when it comes to harvesting these tree nuts.
At Mana Botanics, we pride ourselves on our cultivation partners’ integrity in preparing our carefully selected ingredients. Our macadamia nut oil is no exception! From soil to oil, the entire process is handled with the utmost care and attention.
Australia is the origin of Hawaii’s flourishing macadamia nut tree orchards. They were first brought over in the late 1800s and began to flourish in the 1930s. By the end of WWII, the Aloha State overtook Australia to become the number one producer of macadamias in the world. The chocolate-covered mac nut is still a common tourist delight.
Honaunau Farm, the birthplace of Mana Botanics, was first cultivated in the 1980s as a macadamia nut farm before becoming the diverse regenerative farm it now is. It still has 150 macadamia nut trees which are enjoyed by those living on-site and are a delicious treat for traveling guests and visitors.
These hearty, tasty nuts and their rich oil inspired the creation of Mana’s Best Tasting Hemp Oil. Located in a region with some organic macadamia nut farms and local processing, it was a match made in heaven to pair the benefits of hemp with the benefits and delicious flavor of macadamia nut oil. Nevertheless, it was the first creation of its kind on the market and Mana’s Hemp Oil continues to be a unique combination that most all who have the opportunity to experience it enjoy both its flavor and the relief it offers.
Macadamia trees take about eight months to produce nuts. When they are ripened, they fall from their branches onto the ground below. They will continue to grow and fall about every six to eight weeks year-round, though the summer months tend to produce less.
Furthermore, every macadamia nut is handled at least four times during its life cycle. First, the tree nuts fall off the tree and land on the ground, where they are picked up when ripe. Then, they are placed on large drying racks where they rest until the outside of the nut, the husk, has dried.
When this happens, the tough outer husks are removed from the outside of the nut. Then, a second drying process begins until each macadamia nut is cured and dried to the optimal moisture level. Next, the nut is cracked open, and all of the nuts are thoroughly washed and sorted before they are ready for processing.
Many commercial macadamia growers spray chemical fertilizers and pesticides on the grasses below their trees to keep the vegetation low. This makes it easier to gather the nuts from the ground, exposing them to harmful chemicals.
The macadamia nuts in our oils are picked off the ground from manually trimmed grasses that have not been treated with any pesticides, ensuring a 100% organic product. These raw macadamia nuts are then cold-pressed only one time. By performing only a single press on each batch of nuts, the maximum nutritional value is maintained as well as the delicious flavor.
Mana is committed to sustainability and supporting local farms at every turn. The cultivation of the macadamia nut and pressing of its oil leaves valuable by-products as well. The husks and shells can be composted into rich soil. So, you can pasture animals under the trees for grass control, natural fertilizer, and conservation of fossil fuels by reducing the need to cut as much grass.
Thoughtful macadamia nut oil processing is a top priority for Mana. As stewards of the land, we are grateful for the bounty given to us in our lush homeland on the Big Island and will continue to use only the finest ingredients for all of our edible and skincare products.
